Landing in Cincinnati: the guide we wish we had
Written and maintained by members who have done all of this themselves. If something here is out of date, tell us through the feedback form.
Before you fly
- Post in the community group two weeks ahead — someone can usually meet you at CVG and lend you bedding for the first nights.
- Bring original certificates, vaccination records and a few passport photos. Getting them couriered later is painful.
- Pack a week of medicine with prescriptions. Refills need a US doctor's visit.
- Do not overpack rice and spices — everything is available here at reasonable prices.
Your first two weeks
- Get a US phone number first; almost every other step needs one. Prepaid plans work without credit history.
- Open a bank account. Bring your passport, I-20 or offer letter, and your local address.
- Apply for an SSN if you are eligible — the Social Security office in downtown Cincinnati takes walk-ins.
- Get an Ohio driver's licence or state ID. Study the digest; the written test is straightforward.
Housing
- Popular areas: Clifton and Corryville for UC students; Mason, West Chester and Liberty Township for families with school-age children; Blue Ash and Sharonville for a shorter commute to the north-side employers.
- Most leases run 12 months and ask for proof of income around three times the rent. A co-signer or larger deposit is common in the first year.
- Ask in the community group before signing — members know which complexes have real problems.
- Budget for renters insurance, and check whether heating is included over winter.
Schools and childcare
- Ohio school districts vary a lot; the district determines the school, so check ratings before choosing an apartment.
- Enrolment needs proof of address, immunisation records and a birth certificate.
- Children take part in the cultural programmes — the 2026 Pohela Baisakh celebration was built around the six seasons of Bangladesh, with a group preparing each segment.
- Ask in the Facebook group about childcare and babysitting; families in the same district usually sort something out between them.
Getting around
- Cincinnati is a driving city. Public transit works for the UC campus area but is limited elsewhere.
- An international licence is valid for a short period; get an Ohio licence early.
- Buying a used car: get a pre-purchase inspection, and ask members for mechanic recommendations.
- Winter driving takes practice. Go slow, leave distance, and do not panic-brake on ice.
Food, faith and health
- Halal butchers and South Asian grocers are concentrated along the Kemper Road and Fields Ertel corridors.
- Several masjids across the metro run daily prayers and Ramadan programmes; the Durga Puja committee organises the autumn programme.
- Health insurance is essential. Understand your deductible before you need care.
- For non-emergencies, urgent care is far cheaper than an emergency room visit.
